Fear and Hope

Saw the movie "Children of Men" the other night.

There are an awful lot of sources - from movies such as this to headlines about resetting the Doomsday Clock - that are pointing to a dim future and attempting to cripple us with fear.

Where are the light-bringers? Where are the stories of hope? Where are the encouraging voices?

Certainly issues need to be addressed. But as the old adage goes, "Where attention goes, energy follows." Let's start pointing our attention toward a positive future, shall we?

Well, I haven't written my review yet, but I think hope is the theme of Children of Men.

What about the Christian parallels? A pregnant woman being escorted by a man who is not the father, on a very dangerous trip, to give birth to the One who offers hope to humanity?

Oh yeah, and shown on Christmas Day?

I agree that the OVERALL theme was hope...

...but the premise of the movie itself, set in a horrific version of the future... as well as little digs like "This song is a golden oldie from way back in 2003 when they had no idea that the future was right around the corner" and the fact that their boy died in the "flu pandemic of 2008." It's just... it seems that negative fearful visions of the future is all I have been seeing lately.

You've got a point there... Have you ever read Ray Bradbury's story, "The Toynbee Convector?" A really intriguing tale about how a story of humanity coming through the crisis actually helps it to do so.
