Seasons / Gagging on God

Today is the first official day of spring and it's snowing like crazy outside right now. What a weird metaphor, actually. I find it interesting the seasons we go through in life.

For the past few months, I have been gung-ho on my spiritual practices (daily meditation, readings, etc) and have felt like I've just been marinating in the things of God.

But over the past week I just want nothing to do with higher and nobler things like God and spirituality. I'm not having a bad week, nor am I unhappy, it's just that "all things spiritual" are kind of making me queasy right now. (Maybe I've been on overload?)

I think I may metaphysically vomit.

Anyway, what I'm realizing as I get older is that these times come and go. I'm not the least bit worried about it and don't wish it was any other way than it is. When the time comes (probably in the next week or two), the things of God will return to being my passion and life blood.

Until then, I'm reminded of that great line from the Matrix.... [Cypher]: "You know, I know this steak doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize? [Takes a bite of steak] Ignorance is bliss."

good ways to look at it, dude. maybe even the perfect way to handle it for now. in the meantime, another "yes, and...." idea to throw into the mix:

on a video of the trappist gethsemani monestary in kentucky (where merton lived quite a long time), a monk being interviewed says when he is in a mood where he isn't inspired to pray, meditate, read scriptures, and so on, he....prays, meditates, reads scriptures, and so on.

i understand giving it a rest and simply being; i would suggest not letting moss gather on your rolling stone as well.

"I think I may metaphysically vomit."

Ha! I understand!

The ebb and flow is a good thing, for how would we know the indescribable intensities of the highs and lows otherwise.

I believe it takes 'good' to show us how 'bad', 'bad' can actually seem-and visa-versa (does that make sense)?

It’s all good- in my book…

Snow-heh? Even the seasons get confused.

KEV - Good point, it's kind of one of those "fake it 'til you make it" things. I hear ya, but no moss will gather... just need some downtime to recharge batteries.

TOMMY - Makes total sense. From a Jason Mraz song: "It takes a night to make it dawn; And it takes a day to you yawn brother; It takes some old to make you young; It takes some cold to know the sun; It takes the one to have the other."

That's why I'm not sweatin' it! :)

yeah, right on. in that case, from a blink 182 song: let's go smoke some pot!

isaiah - i dig that, too, for sure. definitely makes sense. i'm a big thunderstorm fan (didn't say tornados, trev), but if it wasn't sunny every once in a while, i simply wouldn't know the difference, and that would make me sad like kerouac's turtle in the ocean.

Nice painting - who's the artist?

I was talking with my sister this weekend about some of Saint Ignatius' writings (are you familiar?), to me it was a good way of expressing things - it seems as if one is on track, it's up and down and up and down... grow, rest, trial, rest, grow. And the rests never seem long enough, but there's no loss of momentum, just time to gather for the next leap.

Ok, kinda caught me. I stole the image from a search engine online...

I'm a bad boy.

So to answer your question... I'm ... not so sure.

I definitely understand you, Trev...

I think the thing is that even mystics sometimes confuse spirituality and religion. The texts, the words, the practices... All fingers pointing at the moon.

What is the moon?
A little girl burping.
